Cristo and Jeanne-Claude’s Gates were unfurled in New York City’s Central Park in February 2005 for two weeks, during which time we had the biggest stowstorm of the season.
I visited the Gates twice, once on a sunny day and the again just after the snowstorm, and passed them many more times as I headed crosstown on the Central Park transverse.
Every time was a gift and a splice of joy in my day.
What I found so amazing about the Gates was the sheer numbers of people who came to the Park in the midst of winter, strolling and engaging with nature and with one another.
That’s what the Gates did – it got us off the couch, out of our apartments and into the Park in the dead of winter.
It was magical, and I will never forget it.
