On the way home yesterday from dropping our younger daughter off at camp in the Pine Barrens of New Jersey, we stopped at a farm stand for our first corn of the summer. Sweet white Jersey corn, fresh from the fields.
Paired with fresh Jersey tomatoes, it’s one of our favorite meals on a hot summer night. That’s the whole meal. Just tomatoes and corn. Washed down with a cold beer, of course.
Where do you get your favorite summer corn?
Farmers market corn and tomatoes are our favorites too.
The corn needs to be barely cooked (not boiled for a half hour like my mom used to do it) and we eat it with salt, pepper and it doesn’t need butter. It’s heaven.
Up here in Maine, we have another month before the first corn of the season comes in. We like to get it at the Farmer’s Market. Mmmm, tomatoes and corn!
Wow, I was out riding today and the corn is maybe knee high. We have a long way to go before it’s in season!
I love it grilled: soak for an hour or so in a bucket of water(with the husk and all on), the put it on the grill in the husk. So good! (But I always burn my fingers getting it out of the husk!)
Great food photo.
My favorite corn stand was:
Every August the Carlisle family would load up their truck and sell it on the side of the road across from Isaly’s on Jefferson Ave. in Washington, PA. Mom would pick it up on the way home from work.
Delicious.
There’s a cornfield just a short walk from our house that has a ‘right of way’ footpath through the centre (I live in Britain). During late summer it’s one of our favourite walks.
Right now it’s the season for strawberries, clotted cream and a glass of Pimms.
Love your blog. One day I’ll make one of your dishes.
I grew up on a farm in southern Indiana…so that’s where I get my favorite corn 🙂
That’s the whole meal. Just tomatoes and corn. Washed down with a cold beer, of course.
Um. Where is the protein in that meal? 😉
Teresa-
Actually, corn has protein. So does a tomato.
And, believe it or not, so does Beer!
Well just about everything has protein in it. As you point out, beer has 2g per can. Wow! No wonder people need to drink so much beer.
But the meal sounds delicious, sans beer, and it’s one I would choose myself. Hardly anything beats fresh fruits and vegetables in season. Say, that reminds me, peaches are now in season. Gotta go pig out on those. I might just have only peaches for supper.
Oh you make me homesick!
