Diet Update – Week 9

I’ve lost 20 lbs since starting this little adventure on July 15.

Last week, I tried a different Zone diet food delivery service. (It was a bit cheaper) While I continued to lose weight, I did not like the food – it was fresh, but it was basically diet food. Every dinner was dry broiled fish or chicken and flavorless steamed veggies. Every lunch was a dry salad. The portions were huge, but there are only so many steamed vegetables and raw cabbage slaws a person can eat.

So I’m going back to my first Zone Diet food delivery plan, with it’s variety and flavor and smaller portions, (and incredible muffins) and sticking with it till I’m down to my wedding weight. If things go as planned, I’ll be there sometime in early spring.

It’s actually a good thing I have so much weight to lose, because it’s gonna’ take that long for me to relearn how to feel hunger, how to learn what to do instead of eat when I am stressed, and how to deal on my own with food cravings that seem to be either hormonally or carbohydrate mediated (or both).

This weekend, I went a bit out of control. I was between delivery plans, on my own and into the progesterone phase of my HRT cycle. It really scared me how quickly I went back to my old habits, and it was such a relief to have my food show up for me at the door on Monday morning.  I’m back in the saddle again, though 2 pounds heavier than I would have been if I hadn’t gone off program.  I think the hard part about what I am doing is going to be keeping the weight off once I am off this food delivery.

I’m continuing to bike in Central Park (thanks, Linda for pushing me to do the second loop and Mr TBTAM for always being willing to come along…), walking (thanks Sarah for getting me going) and using my bike on errands rather than taking the car or bus. When I visited my friend Jane at the beach last weekend, I brought my bike with me and our visit became a nice long bike ride instead of a nice long eat and drink fest. (Thanks, Jane for going along with the plan!)

If When I get to goal, it will be as much due to my wonderfully supportive friends and family as it will be to my own efforts.

  1. Isn’t exercise great? The Mrs and I take try and take our two little greyhounds out almost every night for a 3 mile walk. It’s addicting once you get that feeling.

  2. Good for you! BTW, I do agree that even when you have a plan that’s working and you like the food, it’s scary how easy it is to slip back in to “just eat anything you come across” mode. I guess this is why so many of us have to go on diets!

  3. I’m on week 5 of the Atkins diet – basically omelets, fish, and spinach with the occasional burger. I’ve lost 7 pounds so far. I try to walk as much as I can – wart treatment set me back a few days. When I lived in NYC I tried the Zone delivery service. It worked well for me… 🙂

  4. Dr Val –

Altkins is great. I lost 25 lbs with it once a few years back.

If the foot is limiting you, try the bike. I have been battling a case of plantar fasciits and can;t walk too much, ergo the wheels.

Too bad you’re not in NYC – we could bike together in the park.

Best of luck with the diet! (From your photo on Emergiblogs site, you don’t have much left to lose…)

  5. Congratulations- it sounds like you are well on your way to the results that you want!

Are you happy with the Zone diet overall? My husband and I were talking about it last night as he’s in his 4th year post-gastric bypass, and we were discussing different diets. I’m just wondering if there’s anything about this particular diet that you like over other diets?

Congratulations, and I hope that it continues to go well!

  6. Jen-

Thanks for the encouragement. You know, I had never really tried the zone before, though I remember reading about it in a bookstore once while waiting for a movie to start at the local theater. I did this diet really for convenience and the great food. But now that I am doing it, I can see that this is really a nice diet. I can’t do South beach or Atkins anymore – my stomach can’t take all that protein. I really do need some carbs, abd this diet has just the right amount of the good ones without triggering my carb cravings. I certainly think the combo is a healthy one, especially as it inlcudes the good fats. It’s simpler than many (just divide up the plate between protein carbs and healthy fats). I think once I get off the delivery plan I will aim for womthing like it in my diet.

  7. Thanks for the review of it- I’ve actually been thinking that I should possibly go on a diet soon, but I can’t stand the thought of completely giving up carbs. To me it seems that a “diet” is going to be healthier, and longer-lasting, if it mixes the different food groups.

  8. You probably know this, but Ben Gay does wonders for planar fasciits.

I got this from my hand surgeon who also does newborn feet.
