Pastry Politics

In my last post, we discussed whether or not Obama was like a popover and why. (Hat tip to Valentine Bonnair for the comparison.) Of course, one must now ask – If Obama is a popover, what are the other presidential candidates?

Obama = Popover.Very quick to make, fast rise in a hot oven; be careful not to take it out before it is done or it will collapse. Delicious flavor alone, but really needs a little butter and jam to make it perfect. Everyone loves popovers.

Hillary = Sourdough bread. Needs a starter from a previously made bread to get going. Slow rise, punched down halfway and risen again. Has a wonderfully complex flavor, but can be a little tough and chewy. Not everyone likes sourdough bread, but those who do adore it.

McCain = Biscotti. Dry, hard, slowly baked and twice-cooked. Will keep for long periods of time in a can without losing flavor, making biscotti a favorite among soldiers and sailors. If a biscotti loses crispness, it can be put toasted in a low oven until crunchy again. Best eaten dunked in wine or strong coffee to soften.

Nader = Fruitcake. Has lots of fruits and nuts, all of which are good for you, and yet for some reason not many people like it. Can keep for years in a tightly closed tin. The same unopened fruitcake will get recycled year after year with no one ever eating it. Europeans appreciate fruitcake more than Americans do.

Discuss.

  1. OK, this may be a bit mean, but McCain to me is like an old wine. It has been locked up for a long time, and the flavor is unpredictable. It could be warm and soothing, or completely bitter. Who knows what you are going to get?

Obama is like a potato since he looks like Mr. Potato Head.

Hillary is like a steak. Some like/savor red meat, others stay away from it since it is unhealthy. Others abhore it due to cultural differences. Regardless, however, it is a polarizing food, much like Hillary.

I like many foods, and remain undecided about what to have for lunch now…

  2. Schruggling you’re back!!!!!Hooray!!!

Many are undecided diners, and thus when the choice comes to them say “I’ll go last”. But sooner or later we all must choose, or go hungry and let others feed us their choice.

  3. I wish I could think of something clever and witty to say, but I can’t quit laughing! You should email this to Jon Stewart.

  4. Okay, okay…this is very funny. Did you see the Salon.com piece on brands? I used to work in advertising so I have watched how Obama has used branding techniques in the web to sell himself to the American public. This is a first for the White House and I have written all about it. Actually, I see him more as a waffle now, as in waffling on everything. Ahem. It’s nice to meet you, and terrific blog name too!

    have a read!

  5. I agree with Kalyn. I too, like sourdough bread. I like its depth of flavor coming from the past as well as into the future. It’s satisfying, dependable and sturdy.

  6. Loved this! 🙂

I wasn’t feeling inspired but I find myself thinking more and more about biscotti. 🙂

I always liked Ralph Nader although never voted for him in the green party. Remember him from the Donahue days.

    Fruitcake? Bah Humbug! 😉

  7. I’m thinking the incumbent is like one of those cook it yourself from a tube biscuits, flaky, tasteless, and not very good for you?

(Any minute, men in dark suits wearing sunglasses will be knocking on my door.)

  8. Holy c**P! This post was hilarious! Your Hillary and McCain anaologies were PERFECT! hahahahhahahahahahaaa

Okay…going to laugh about this some more…

Again, sorry for the 2 year late bump!
