Sondheim, b.i.d.*

Take your morning dose with your musical theater class doing a read/sing through of Side by Side by Sondheim. (Everyone sounded great!)

Take your afternoon dose with your best college buds seeing A Little Night Music. (Angela Lansbury is perfect, Catherine Zeta Jones born to the role and Alexander Hanson the sexiest Fredrik ever. The supporting cast is equally excellent. Go see it!)

Food interactions (such as lunch at La Masseria) can occur, and may increase the level of joy.

  1. Oooooh. I want to see this production of ALNM! I saw the one currently playing in London, and while the production was great, the singing universally sucked. I'd love to see this one! Thanks for posting. I may have to see what I can do. 🙂

  2. Sounds like something I'd like to see.

A bit off topic but music related: have you watched "The Audition" on PBS on 1/20? It was so good – makes me a bit upset though that so many people go wild over a so-so sung aria on popular talent shows but ignore these amazingly talented people who compete in real opera competitions.

  3. I never quite loved Sondheim, BUT…Barbara Cook will be celebrating her 80th Birthday by singing in "Sondheim on Sondheim" at Studio 54 later this season (3/19-6/13). Now, Barbara Cook can sing Sondheim (or anything else she wants for that matter) and I'll be there to hear it.

  4. Barbara Cook is great – I like to listen to her as well.

One thing I'd like to add to my previous post (again, sorry about being off topic, but we are talking about spending afternoon with music and I am sure everyone who loves music would love this): "The Audition" is going to be rebroadcast at least in NY area on February 7th at noon on PBS Sundays with the Arts; also on channel 21 (in NY) at 3pm.

I think this documentary is an absolute must for everyone who has ever gotten impressed by a so-called "opera" performance on [whatever] got talent shows. It helps put the talents of contestants of popular talent shows (BGT/AGT/Idol) into perspective. It's also a really good documentary.
